Blushing and a Penguin.

image01.jpgFinally, it’s done.  Actually, It’s not done; luckily, you can’t see the back.  All I have left to do is to weave in thousands of ends on the back of the Blushing Grannies Afghan from Crochet Today (Feb 2007).  It will get done eventually, but I really just feel like letting it sit and moving on to something new.  I’m excited to have made it that far.  The afghan is for my boyfriend’s dorm room.  It will look great on his black comforter.  Coincidentally, the blanket and his comforter make up his high school colors.

I also finished Pasha the Penguin, although no one but my new found knitting group new I Pashawas making it.  I don’t think it is the best job; he sits kind of crooked.  However, it was a great way to get rid of some scrap yarn.  Instead of the recommended yarn, I used leftovers of Redheart Super Saver in Black, White, and Orange.  He turned out cute.

I am now starting on Honey Bunny and a dog leash from Knitting Loves Crochet.  I finally figured out the pattern to my shirt (thanks to a lady from my knitting group), so I will continue working on that. I’ve been making a scrap afghanScrap, but I’m not sure about it anymore.  What do you think? Once I get the yarn, I also plan to start working on Luxe Ripple throw from Crochet Today (Feb 2007), the Tailgate Rag Rug from Mason Dixon Knitting, and the Laptop Case from Alterknits.  Instead of a striping pattern on the case I am going to use white wool, felt it, then tie dye it.  I hope it turns out good.

Aside from yarn work, I plan on working on my furnture soon (pictures in the post “A Peek”).  I am going to paint the white piece green with swirls on it (for the boyfriend).  The wood piece will be sanded, stained, and hopefully mosiac tiles on the top.  I don’t know how to do mosiac tiling, but we will find out if I can.

WheelI went to my Grandmother’s house yesterday and looked through her Antique Boxantiques and old photos.  I am going to scan some of the photos to do some paper projects with.  I convinced her to give me this box (which now holds my yarn), but I have to make her something in return.  She said if I helped her clean I could have more of her old things.  I am excited Basketabout this because there is a lot that I want.  She also had this old wheel thing that spins yarn into skiens, I guess.  Does anyone know for sure what it is?  Lastly, I got this great basket shelf thing from Hobby Lobby for $10.00.  Doesn’t my purple yarn look great in it?

Happy Knitting and Crafting,

Kate

  1. Kate, your “old wheel thing” is a SWIFT, a skein winder originally used to wind handspun yarn off a spinning wheel bobbin so it could be prepared for setting the twist in the yarn before using. I don’t know how old yours is as they are still around and there are a lot of reproductions being made of the antique ones. If it clicks as it is turned, it has a counter so spinners could keep track of how many yards they had in each skein. Maybe your grandma has a spinning wheel tucked away somewhere, too? It’s a lot of fun to make your own “designer yarns” for special projects.
